Chiropractic Care in the NFL:
How Teams Gain the Edge
Science has proven that when two NFL players collide on the gridiron, they’re hitting each other with a force of about 1,600 lbs! This is equivalent to an auto accident where the cars are traveling at about 25-30 mph. And the hits are only getting harder with each successful season.
With players putting themselves through 15-25 hits like this per game, it’s clear that they require immense conditioning and training to withstand the damage. Unfortunately, no amount of conditioning can truly protect your body from such devastating forces. The next best thing it rehabilitative care, which is a need that chiropractic care is beginning to find itself filling at the NFL level.
In 2012, at least 24 NFL franchises had a certified chiropractor on staff. Today, every team works with at least one chiropractor and many teams have several on staff. Teams are beginning to see that the best way to keep their stars on the field is to ensure players are getting the best rehabilitative treatment possible – especially when it comes to the spine.
Dexterity, agility, and maneuverability
It’s not often we hear about spinal injuries in the NFL. When we do, it’s usually a horrible story about a career-ending hit that caused some form of spinal damage. Few players, legendary quarterback Peyton Manning excepted, come back from a spinal injury to play at a high level.
An NFL player’s greatest attributes are his physical ones. Being able to rocket out of a stance, run down a ball carrier, and deliver an earth-shattering tackle are how players keep their jobs. All of these abilities depend on having a spine that’s in perfect health. A spine that’s out of alignment hinders these traits and decreases player performance.
Staying healthy all season and beyond
Team chiropractors are working to ensure that players are able to overcome the constant battering they face on the field and hit practice the next day with a spine that’s healthy. In conjunction with proper strength and conditioning, chiropractors are also helping players to build their spinal strength in a myriad of ways. This includes strengthening the muscles that support the spine and working to instill flexibility in players.
A properly aligned spine allows players to practice to their fullest, condition their bodies to an optimum level, and have a meaningful life between games and after their football careers. It can also help players avoid chronic conditions and ailments that are widespread among their peers, including CTE-related head trauma, chronic back and neck pain, and even Parkinson’s Disease.
By preserving the structure of the spine, as well as the nerve pathways running through it, NFL chiropractors are working to help players keep pace with the increasing speed of the game and protect their bodies in the process.
Sports care at all ages
There’s a good chance you don’t have an NFL star in the family, but you may have a high school varsity player or little league champion in the house. These players still take the same hits as the professionals, just on a smaller scale. This means they could be subject to the same injuries and long-term concerns.
